For the first time, Bulgaria celebrates the International Holocaust Day as a full member of the International Alliance. 76 years ago their lives lost over 6 million Jews. Today, ambassadors and public figures have gathered together to recall the story of Sir Nicholas Winton, who has saved 8 trains with children from the death camps.

Historians estimate the total number of deaths to be 11 million, with the victims encompassing gay people, priests, gypsies, people with mental or physical disabilities, communists, trade unionists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, anarchists, Poles and other Slavic peoples, black people and resistance fighters. Half of the victims who weren’t Jewish were Polish.

Irit Lillian, Ambassador of Israel to Bulgaria: Change is in the hands of every single person. We say "never again", but we are responsible for this not to happen again.

She  thanked Bulgaria for rescuing more than 48,000 Bulgarian Jews.
