98 people were killed and 160 were injured in sandstorms last night in northern India, authorities said.

The most affected by the elements are the states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, where the victims are 46 and 31 respectively, according to officials of the disaster response authorities in India.

Most of the dead have been the victims of falling trees and electric poles, or the collapse of walls and roofs of buildings that have not resisted the exceptionally strong wind.

The Associated Press reports of strong thunderstorms accompanied by torrential rains that took 72 victims in northern and western India. Authorities fear that the number of people killed may increase as there is not yet complete information on damage in remote areas, DPA reported.

Sandstorms, accompanied by extremely strong winds, are common for the summer season in these parts of India. Thunderstorms with gusty winds across northern India are expected today, the meteorological service said.

Disaster response commissioner Sanjay Kumar said the devastation is particularly strong in the northern Indian city of Agra, where the marble mausoleum Taj Mahal is located.

On Wednesday evening 36 people died in Agra and the wind reached 130 km / h. Some people were killed by lightning, the Associated Press reported.
