7 million people die each year from exposure to polluted air, Darik Radio reports, citing DPA and TASS. According to a World Health Organization  report, external air pollution is responsible for 4.2 million deaths annually, and household pollution is responsible for 3.8 million cases.

According to the WHO, levels of air pollution remain dangerously high in many parts of the world. The organization reports that nine out of ten people are breathing highly polluted air. They also note that air pollution is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases and causes 24% of deaths from cardiovascular disease, 25% from stroke, 43% from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 29% from lung cancer.

Over 90% of air pollution deaths are recorded in low and middle income countries, mainly in Asia and Africa, followed by the East-Mediterranean region, Europe and America.

"Air pollution is a threat to all of us, but the poorest people carry the worst burden, and it is unacceptable that over 3 billion people, most of whom women and children, breathe polluted air because of the lack of environmental technologies for preparing food. If we do not take urgent action to tackle the air pollution problem, we will not get closer to achieving sustainable development goals, "said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
