Bulgaria ranks last in the EU by number of nursing homes for seniors for settlements. There are eighty-two in total for the country. And there are just over 5600 people living in them. However, the available places are not enough. Approximately 4,000 other pensioners are waiting for accommodation, Nova TV reported.

Most are waiting for a place in institutions that care for people with different disabilities, mental disorders and dementia. More than 40 million leva have been earmarked for the creation of such centers. The money should go to the construction and repair of 74 homes for support and care for the elderly in the country.

"The idea is not to bring people together and to receive, as homes for children where the service is concentrated in one place but will be in much smaller centers with fewer people with the corresponding more adequate care "said Denitsa Nikolova, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works.

Priority will be given to people with mental disorders, dementia, and those who can not take care of themselves. The project provides for new centers to exist in 29 municipalities. Municipalities can choose whether to build them from scratch or to reconstruct existing ones.
