Bulgaria is again the country with the highest mortality rate across the European Union. This is according to  the European Statistical Office. According to data for 2015, the mortality rate in Bulgaria was 1660 per 100 000 people. In the EU, the average was 1036 deaths per 100,000.

Bulgaria is followed by Romania - 1530 per 100,000, Hungary (1500) and Lithuania (1490), followed by Latvia (1489), Croatia (1430) and Slovakia (1390). "Excellencies" are France with a death rate of 859 per 100,000, Spain (873), Italy (901), Sweden (927) and Luxembourg (930).

The main causes of death in both the EU and Bulgaria are cardiovascular and oncological diseases. Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in all EU Member States, with the exception of Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the UK, where the main cause of death is cancer. According to data from the National Statistical Institute in 2015, 110 117 people died in Bulgaria, with over 72 thousand of them being circulatory diseases.

Eurostat data since 2011 has invariably put Bulgaria at the forefront of mortality, with the worst situation in 2012, when there are 1709 deaths per 100,000 people in Bulgaria.

In 2012, the highest mortality rates for the EU were recorded in five of the six Bulgarian regions (excluding the Southwest). The highest mortality rate is in the Northwest region.

However, life expectancy in the country increases - in women it is 78.5 years and in men - 71.3. In 2005, the data was 76.2 and 69 years respectively.
