Every second German company encounters difficulties in filling positions that require a skilled workforce. According to a study by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), quoted by BTA.

Almost half of the 24,000 companies surveyed said that the shortage of skilled workers in Germany began to affect their activity, whereas only a little over a third of them had responded like that a year ago.

The sectors of construction, logistics, gastronomy and care for patients are particularly affected, according to the study, which warned that this could have an adverse effect on investment and economic growth.

The association adds that, according to its calculations, there are currently 1.6 million vacancies for skilled workers and that the trend will increase in the coming years.

Its head, Ahim Derx, said one of the reasons for the deficit is perhaps the demographic factor in Germany where birth rates are one of the lowest in the world. He added that immigration from other EU countries in recent years has helped to improve the situation, and that immigration from non-EU countries, including those arriving during the refugee crisis, can also help fill the gap.
