The news of the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has shocked the world, but North Korean state media have so far reported nothing of it, the Associated Press reported.

Pyongyang is surprisingly silent after a series of important, perhaps even historic, events of recent months.

In fact, the North Korean authorities for more than a month have not allowed foreign media representatives to visit the country, and although they are talking about improving inter-Korean relations, they adhere to the same angry tone directed against the United States and supporting nuclear weapons as well as rocket trials last year.

Seoul officials say Pyongyang does not inform them either. "As for the North Korea-US summit, there is no official response from the North Korean government, so we think North Korea is cautious about the issue because it needs time to prepare for its position," a spokesman for the South Korean ministry of national unification.

For the North Korean media, it is not unusual to delay news reporting. Since they are state-owned, all newspapers, radio, television and the official news agency consistently adhere to the official position. As the South Korean spokesman noted, it sometimes takes a while to decide what the official position would be.

It is also possible for the North Korean government to delay because it worries that the proposal for the meeting may fail, and this can be difficult to explain to the public.

So far, however, the only official announcement of the North Korean proposal to meet Trump in exchange for a moratorium on missile and nuclear trials has come from South Korea.

The North Korean newspaper, Nodon Singhun, published just a few paragraphs about the visit of senior South Korean officials last week.

It did not mention anything about any summit plans, not to mention any conditions or statements about whether Kim seriously considered giving up his nuclear weapons, the Associated Press noted.
