Women in the new technologies sector are just under 20%, Europe's commissioner for digital economy and society, Maria Gabriel, said citing a new study by the European Commission. 80 million Europeans have never used the Internet, and 44% have no basic digital skills, she said.

A new study by the European Commission takes into account the negative and worrying trend of women's presence in new technologies, the EU commissioner said before the participants in the forum "Europe starts in your village, city, region".

"Only 17% of those working in the area of communication and information technologies are women, only 19% of entrepreneurs in new technologies in Europe are women, meanwhile women-led startups show 63% more positive results. We need to encourage more girls in the education system to follow mathematical engineering, "she explained.

Maria Gabriel also stressed the need to increase the digital skills of teachers. She commented on other alarming figures.

"80 million Europeans have never used the internet, and we are talking about online banking, blockchain. Can you imagine how far these people are from the things we want to do for them." 44% of Europeans lack basic digital skills, 37 % of Europe's workforce has only basic digital skills, and post-2020 jobs will require basic digital skills, "said Gabriel.

The Euro Commissioner pointed out that since June this year, there will be an opportunity for a cross-border paid traineeship in Europe for 6000 students. On March 20th, the launch of the WiFi4EU project, with a budget of 120m euros, will be announced to provide wireless internet for Europe's municipalities. The project is expected to cover between 6000 and 8000 municipalities.
