The Constitutional Court in Italy has decided that parts of the electoral law in the country are not valid which could lead to snap elections in 2017, reported Reuters.

The populist movement Five Stars, which leads in terms of popularity at the moment, immediately called for new parliamentary elections.

The written ruling rejects the option of national parliamentary elections being held in two rounds.

The judges, however, confirmed the principle that whichever party wins at least 40% of the valid votes will automatically receive a parliamentary majority.

These principles may be used immediately if the politicians decide to call snap elections.
