Canada’s Prime Minister has appointed an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin as Foreign Minister.

PM Justin Trudeau announced that former Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland will assume the office of top diplomat replacing Stéphane Dion.

Chrystia Freeland is of Ukrainian origin and a former reporter of Reuters and Financial Times.

In the 1990s, Freeland was head of the local office of Financial Times and she interviewed Vladimir Putin in the year 2000. She reported on the war in Chechnya and wrote a book on the rise of Russia’s oligarchs.

She is especially critical of President Putin and claims that his leadership verges on a dictatorship.
