The Bulgarian government has tasked outgoing Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova with signing a Memorandum of Understanding on the gas interconnector with Serbia.

The draft MoU was approved last year and aims at speeding up construction activities.

The document reflects updates to technical parameters of the gas link which have become necessary since the initial bilateral agreement of December 2012, according to a cabinet statement.

A technical project for the Bulgarian stretch of the link and a joint road map for the project, shown to the EU Commission in September 2015, have been added to the new version.

The first phase of the interconnector was completed on December 31, 2015 using EU funding from the last program period (2007-2013). More EU money is to be sought for the second phase through Operational Program Innovations and Competitiveness under the current period (2014-2020).

Bulgaria is working to build gas links with its neighbors, but so far only the one with Romania has been completed.
