Bulgarian FM Sees Trump's Call as Good Sign

Outgoing Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov has described the phone conversation between Prime Minister in resignation Boyko Borisov and US President-elect Donald Trump as a sign the country is "a leader on the Balkans".

In an interview with Kanal 3, a private broadcaster, he has claimed to have been a key part of organizing the conversation, turning Borisov into one of the first world leaders Trump spoke to after winning the November 8 election.

Mitov has described the development as a "recognition" of Bulgaria's partnership and its success in "maintaining stability in a very difficult moment".

However, there was no mention of Bulgaria's demands for the abolition of the currently existing visa requirements for those traveling to the US, he has made it clear.

Bulgaria's top diplomat has also fended off corruption claims hurled by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and his predecessor Kristian Vigenin, who last week referred a deal contracted by the Foreign Ministry to the Chief Prosecutor, freezing transactions.
