Bulgaria observes on Monday a day of national mourning over the incident in the northeastern village of Hitrino where seven people died after a gas explosion caused by a train derailment.

National flags will be flown at half-mast at all state institutions.

There will be no major political events, with the mandate ceremony held by President Rosen Plevneliev being postponed for Tuesday.

Out of the twenty-nine people injured, eight are being treated in a hospital in the nearby town of Shumen and seven are in facilities in Varna, respectively.

Their condition has been reported as severe, but stable, with different rate of body burns.

Several dozen families are left homeless as the blast ravaged their houses and all buildings within a perimeter of 300 m.
