Slovakia has adopted a law which practically prevents Islam from receiving the status of official religion in the near future, reported Reuters, cited by BTA.

Parliament approved on Thursday a normative act submitted by the Slovak National Party – a coalition partner in the government of PM Robert Fico. In order for a given religion to be able to receive state subsidies and manage its own schools, the number of people who practice officially that religion has been increased from 20,000 to 50,000 under the new law.

This amendment will make the registration of Islam in Slovakia very difficult since, according to the latest census, there are merely 2,000 Muslims and no mosques.

The Islamic Foundation of Slovakia claims the number of Muslims is about 5,000.
