The budget of the European Union for 2017 entered into force after the European Parliament approved it with a majority of 438 votes.

This budget carries two messages, stated during the debates the Chairman of the Budget Parliamentary Commission from the French right-wing Jean Arthuis.

“The priority remains, more than ever, the decisive resolution of the problems of migration – via increased control of external borders and, at the same time, adequate settlement of new arrivals combined with the humane repatriation of migrants who do not have the right to asylum. The second message is that the Union will invest in young people – an additional EUR 500 M will be allocated for the initiative against youth unemployment.”

European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, who attended her last negotiations on the European budget, pointed out:

“We were very careful and we introduced the possibility for flexibility in this budget via a reserve of EUR 1.1 B, so that if a new crisis hits us, we will have the funds to react.”
