Lawmakers in Montenegro have approved the new cabinet of the country led by Duško Marković, the deputy head of the ruling party, local media report.

It took a narrow 41 (out of 81) votes to back the new administration, according to news website Vijesti.

Marković is taking over after Milo Đukanović, the long-time strongman in Montenegro politics, announced he would not seek a new term as Prime Minister following the recent parliamentary election.

Đukanović remains at the helm of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), of which the new Prime Minister is deputy chair.

Marković, a former head of the country's intelligence, has said he will seek to maintain good relations with Russia without abandoning EU and NATO integration. He vows his country will join the defense alliance, where it was formally invited late last year, by the end of 2017.

Several opposition parties that made it into Parliament, however, will insist on a re-run of the elections over a number of "regularities", according to Vijesti.
