Bulgaria's Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv Older by Nearly a Century

A newly-discovered sign reads that the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv was built in the 90’s of the 1^st century AD and not as previously thought between 116 and 117 AD, announced the Mayor of Plovdiv Ivan Totev and archaeologists Maya Martinova and Nikolay Sharankov, who read the sign.

Sharankov specified that the sign is in ancient Greek and was discovered at an unknown staircase in the theatre.

According to him, this is the earliest sign which gives information about Philippopolis and the institutions of the city, the creation of the common assembly of the province of Thrace and its leading role in the province during the reign of Domitian.
