Trump's Victory Shakes Kiev

Donald Trump’s victory may leave Ukraine alone and frightened.

The fear is that the newly-elected US President will prefer warm relations with Moscow to the annoyance of supporting Ukraine – a country which he described during his campaign as a “mess”.

“The biggest loser tonight is Ukraine,” wrote Michael McFaul, former ambassador of the USA to Russia, after the election outcome had become clear.

“Your only hope is to start reforms seriously and to keep the support of Europe.”

But the EU is suffering from its own problems like Brexit and the rise of its own populists like Trump which causes anxiety in Kiev that the EU might not be the place to seek support.
