Bulgaria's Parliament Goes on 'Election Break'

Bulgarian lawmakers on Wednesday have voted to adjourn all plenary sessions for until after the presidential election's runoff vote on Sunday.

This comes after a controversial decision early in October to cancel all sessions throughout the campaign that was later reversed.

The proposal to go on holiday until November 14 was submitted by MPs of the Reformist Bloc and the Patriotic Front, a coalition partner and supporter of the government respectively.

It follows a dramatic first round of the presidential elections in which the main ruling GERB party's candidate, Tsetska Tsacheva, failed to get the biggest number of votes. That prompted Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to warn he would resign if she did not win the presidency this Sunday.

Even if the government steps down, however, Parliament cannot be dissolved for early elections until January as the incumbent President does not have the right to do so less than three months before the end of his tenure (which expires on January 22).
