Nearly EUR 12 M in counterfeit bank notes have been discovered near the village of Lenovo in Bulgaria during a specialised operation of the Prosecutor’s Office, the State Agency for National Security (DANS) and the police.

This was announced at a press conference in Plovdiv attended by the Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov.

The bank notes are of the EUR 500 denomination and were forged very professionally but some of the valid symbols are missing.

The amount is a preliminary estimate since the money is still being counted. The bank notes were recovered by divers.

According to Tsatsarov, this is one of the biggest amounts of counterfeit Euro ever discovered.

The bank notes were found at the bottom a dam and are a part of the EUR 14 M which were discovered during a large-scale operation of the police and the Prosecutor’s Office after a signal was received from DANS about an upcoming deal with a large amount of counterfeit Euro.
