Bulgaria Ranked 1st by Road Fatalities in Europe

Bulgaria had the biggest number of road fatalities in the EU last year, European Commission data shows.

The country had a rate of 98 deceased people per million inhabitants, with 95 in neighboring Romania and in Latvia, 82 in Lithuania, and 82 in Croatia.

Malta (26), Sweden (27), the UK (28), Denmark and the Netherlands (31 each) had the lowest number of road fatalities.

Statictics shown on the commission's website include persons deceased within 30 days of a road accident.

Bulgaria's result is worse than in 2014, when the country ranked fourth after Latvia, Lithuania and Romania with 91 fatalities per million inhabitants. In 2013, it came seventh with a result of 83.

The so-called "transport scoreboard" also includes other rankings such as number of rail fatalities, women employed in the transport sector, consumer satisfaction with urban transport, rail transport and air transport.

Made every year since 2013, it also measures transport indicators related to the internal market, investments and infrastructure, Energy Union and innovation.
