Two tremors have shaken the central region of Italy, local media report.

There have been no immediate reports of injuries.

A first quake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, was registered late in the afternoon, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Institute has said.

It was followed by a 6.1-magnitude tremor that jolted Central Italy at 21:18 local time.

Some institutional buildings in the capital Rome were evacuated.

The BBC reports the mayor of a town as saying its residents were without power, and there were damaged buildings.

Italian public broadcaster RAI has shown images of destroyed buildings in some venues.

The quakes follow August 24's powerful jolt slightly to the south, which left several hundred people dead in the region of Amatrice.
