Every Third Bulgarian Lives in Dire StraitsDomestic | October 26, 2016, Wednesday // 19:18| views
Every third Bulgarian lives in dire material straits. 78.5% of households in the country have at their disposal a total income per one person below the means necessary to live.
BGN 2,235 are needed for a four-member family in order for them to live in a normal way in September.
These are some of the conclusions of the regular survey of the Institute for Syndicate and Social Research with KNSB.
Low work remuneration remains the main problem, while people who have started work manage to escape the “poverty trap” very rarely.
These conclusions are confirmed by the latest data of SILC by Eurostat for 2015. 41.3% of Bulgaria’s population is exposed to the “risk of poverty and social exclusion”. Bulgaria ranks first in the EU in this respect, followed by Romania and Greece.
Bulgaria also tops the ranking in terms of the share of people who live in dire straits with 34.2%, followed by Romania (22.7%) and Greece (22.2%).
