Montenegro's Djukanovic Not Up for New PM Term after Elections

Montenegro's longtime Prime Minister Milo ?ukanovi? will not continue as the government head despite just having won a close election race, a statement by his Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) indicated Tuesday.
The DPS policy-making body said after a meeting, chaired by ?ukanovi?, that it will nominate his deputy in the party, Dusko Markovi?, as the prime minister, state TV RTCG reported, quoted by DPA news agency.
The DPS has won all 11 elections since the introduction of multi-party democracy in Montenegro and the former Yugoslavia 25 years ago.
On October 16, it won 36 out of the 81 seats in parliament, closely defeating the four opposition parties that joined forces over a single point of agreement - to topple ?ukanovi?, whom they branded as profoundly corrupt.
In the election night ?ukanovi? said that the DPS will continue governing with its allies - a small Social Democratic Party and four representatives of ethnic minorities - combining for 42 votes in the legislature.
The DPS repeated its call to "natural allies" on October 20.
Over the past 25 years, ?ukanovi? has voluntarily stepped down twice, each time for two years before returning as prime minister. He, however, never ceded the helm over the DPS.
The DPS did not elaborate on the reason it named Markovi? as their candidate for the government head.
It is possible that with the move ?ukanovi? and his party seek to reduce pressure mounting against him or even win back their estranged longtime allies, the Social Democratic Party, with four seats, and create a more cozy majority in parliament.
