Bulgaria's Parliament Removes Cap on Polling Stations in EU

Bulgarian lawmakers have voted to to partly revoke a limit imposed earlier this year on the number of polling stations allowed in EU countries, just 10 days out of the November 06 presidential elections.

Eighty-one MPs have voted to back the amendments, with 21 against and nine abstentions.

Even with the restriction is dropped, though, only one ballot box per section will be allowed abroad. 

The cap remains in force for all countries outside the EU.

Under the latest Electoral Code, only 35 polling stations can be opened in a country to give Bulgarian expats the opportunity to vote. However, public outcry has prompted the government to secure a removal of the cap with regard to EU member states.

Another divisive issue has been the "not voting for anyone" option in the ballots.
