Bulgarians will be able to travel to Canada visa-free as of December 1, 2017.

The agreement was reached during emergency negotiations at a meeting of the European Council, which continued until early in the morning in Brussels on Friday.

Bulgaria and Romania threatened to block the trade agreement between the EU and Canada (CETA), if Ottawa does not abolish visas for Bulgarian and Romanian citizens. Representatives of Bulgaria, Romania, Canada and the EC participated in the negotiations.

“We worked all night, both the European commission and we. Together with the Romanian President, we received reliable confirmations in writing and this was included in the minutes of the Council that, as of December 1, 2017, the visa regime for Canada will be abolished for all Bulgarians. Given this fact, we decided, with the Romanian President, to support the agreement with Canada like all other members of the EU,” stated to journalists in Brussels Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov.

The Walloon government, however, has blocked the agreement for the creation of a free-tradezone between Europe and Canada.
