The Bulgarian EU Commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, has pledged to pursue those who continue to spread "falsehoods" about her through through the courts.

"From on on I will defend my name in court," she has said on Facebook.

Her comments follow an article which appeared on the Foreign Policy Research Institute's website questioning her past, alleging she was an informant for the Soviet-era security apparatus of Bulgaria and had family ties to Multigrup.

The EU Commission has already dismissed the claims.

"Until now I have remained mostly silent about the constant attacks which are being made on me, in spite of the many distortions and outright lies which have sought to damage me and the office in which I serve," Georgieva has explained.

"But I am not prepared to tolerate any longer a character assassination campaign which has been waged against me for many months. My patience has been tested to its limits. I have considered taking legal action in the past and decided to refrain from it. That chapter is over."
