Bulgarian MPs to Hold Emergency Session over Voting Rules

Domestic | October 18, 2016, Tuesday // 07:11|  views

Lawmakers in Bulgaria are to reconvene on Tuesday to vote on urgent amendments to the Electoral Code, less than 20 days before the presidential elections.

The session will follow agreement reached among government parties that the code needs to be changed to address concerns of Bulgarians abroad and experts.

MPs agreed to hold a nearly month-long break from plenary sessions last week to avoid "using the rostrum in the election campaign," with the move sparking outrage from the opposition. Another proposal envisages an end to the election holiday.

The presidential elections are due on November 06.
