The oldest tramways in Sofia, which are more than half a century old, will be decommissioned within a month, stated the Executive Director of Sofia Electric Transport Evgeny Ganchev.

These will be replaced by second-hand tramways purchased from the Czech Republic by Sofia Municipality. 15 of those are already in operation and the remaining 5 will be launched.

At the same time, 5 new trams have been launched along the №1 route. The trams are low-floor, air-conditioned and equipped with cameras and parking buttons, said Sofia Mayor Fandakova.

The vehicles cost the municipality nearly BGN 17 M and, after they have been put into operation, the number of trams in Sofia will increase to 305.

Another 28 used vehicles are expected from Switzerland in 2017. These will be donated under the Bulgarian-Swiss Co-operation Programme.
