Jaber al-Bakr, the Syrian national detained by police on suspicions of a terror attack in preparation has killed himself in his prison cell, German media report.

Saxony's Justice Ministry has added more details will be announced on Thursday.

The 22-year-old suspect was arrested in the city of Leipzig on Monday over data suggesting he was plotting a terror attack comparable to those in Brussles this March and in Paris last November. Police found explosive materials in the home he resided in Chemnitz.

His solicitor has described the suicide as a "scandal". German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quotes him as saying the suicide risk for the detainee should have been taken into account.

The investigation is still ongoing, with authorities believing the attack plotted by Albakr was targeting the airport in Berlin. It is not clear whether the Syrians who detained him, handing him over to police on Monday, are to be treated as witnesses or suspects.
