The parliamentary defense and security committee of Macedonia has proposed an extension of the state of emergency over the increased number of migrants entering and crossing the country.

The move will allow the continuation of activities performed by the army and security forces with the Interior Ministry by June 30, 2017, according to local media.

Zoran Jolevski, Minister of Defense, told a committee meeting that an extension was necessary in view of the continuing instability in Syria and Iraq and poor conditions for migrants in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan could potentially push them to Southeast Europe.

A decision is not expected to be formalized before a plenary session of Parliament.
