Georgia's Ruling Party Wins Elections

Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party of PM Bidzina Ivanishvili has won slightly over half of the vote in the elections held Saturday, official data shows.

With votes from more than 60% of precincts counted, the country's electoral officials have said support for the party amounts to 50.16% of the vote.

Second comes the United National Movement (UNM), the opposition party founded by former President Mikheil Saakashvili, lagging far behind at 26.65%, according to Russian-language news agencies.

These are be the only two parties to have certainly passed the 5-percent threshold neded to make it into Parliament.

However, a patriotic alliance has reached 4.86% and could possibly increase support mustered for it to five percent.

The vote was not unaccompanied by incidents, with foreign election observers in the village of Dzhihashkari havig been attacked by unknown perpetrators.
