World Leaders to Give USD 15 B to Afghanistan amid EU Demand for Return of Migrants

Some USD 15 B in financial assistance were raised for Afghanistan at an international conference in Brussels, with the EU also reaching an agreement on migration and on a renewed peace effort.

The money will have strings attached, with Afghanistan committing itself to a number of reforms, Reuters has said.

A controversial issue is the so-called Joint Way Forward repatriation agreement, which allows EU member states to send back an unlimited number of protection seekers who have not been granted refugee status. A new terminal that will receive the migrants in question is to be built in Kabul, and the country will make effort to break the the smugglers' models and work for the reintegration.

Additionally, the EU pledged to renew a peace process that has ravaged the country for decades, opening the floodgates of large-scale migration to neighboring countries and, increasingly, to Europe.

Bulgarian Prime Minister hailed the development, but tied his country's commitment to the international in Afghanistan to the deportation of migrants. He made the comment at a meeting with the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels. Earlier, Borisov had insisted the country may withdraw its troops from the Central Asian country EU and Afghanistan do not agree ton the readmission of migrants.
