Until January 1, 2015, people at the age of over 80 in Bulgaria were over 331,000 or 4.6% of the entire population, reported Eurostat in an analysis on elderly people in the EU-28 in the period 2005-2015.

This means that almost every 20th person in Bulgaria is over the age of 80.

The European statistics show that, in a decade, people at the age of over 80 have increased by nearly 87,000. In 2005, they were 244,000.

The forecast of the National statistical Institute is that, after 50 years, the number of people at the age of 80-99 will increase by another 100,000.

The population of the EU is ageing as well. Last year, there were 27 million people at the age of 80+. 64.6% were women and 35.4% were men.
