A new unit financed with a part of the EUR 160 M provided by the EU to Bulgaria will outline measures for increasing the security of the country, stated Vice Premier and Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova.

According to her, the unit will be created within the next 10 days. It will deal with the projects for increasing border security and the unit will include representatives of “internal security”.

Commenting on cases of policemen being involved in human trafficking, Bachvarova said that it is a fact that the Interior ministry is reacting adequately and quickly, and that single cases should not be regarded as typical of the institution as a whole.

“Bulgaria is doing everything possible to prevent the movement of people with a jihadist profile through the country,” added the Minister. In a comment on the arrest of a French citizen on suspicions of terrorism, she pointed out the security services have done their job and that international co-operation is a key factor.

“Bulgaria’s location is such that we must take into consideration the fact that people with such a profile pass through it,” added Bachvarova and gave as an example the agreement signed between Bulgaria and the USA on the exchange of DNA and fingerprints.

Bachvarova pointed out that, as soon as the agreement starts working, security services will know very quickly whether illegal migrants detained at the border are considered a threat by the US security services.

According to her, the agreement is in the interest not just of Bulgaria but of the EU as a whole.
