Bulgarian municipalities with bad demographic indicators may integrate refugees permanently. However, it is not clear yet which three pilot municipalities will work on the project of integrating the refugees permanently.

This became clear after the announcement of the Executive Director of the National Association of Municipalities Ginka Chavdarova on BNR. Recently, at a forum on refugees, it was announced that there are 3 municipalities which will work on such a project.

In the summer, the Cabinet approved a decree on the integration of refugees, according to which municipalities will sign contracts with the State Agency for Refugees and the foreigners themselves. Municipalities will receive European funds for every refugee but will undertake the obligation to find them accommodation, work, and provide education and health care.

Chavdarova explained that it is not a matter of temporary camps or the placement of large groups of people but, rather, the assignment of new tasks to municipalities, if there is interest on the part of refugees in permanent residence in Bulgaria on a family basis.

“We will not resort to municipalities with an exhausted social infrastructure capacity. We will turn to municipalities which, due to demographic tendencies have excess social infrastructure, so that no municipality feels harmed or overtaken by another. The readiness and intentions of municipalities are for a family-type migration that will liven up the region, provide labour force diversity and create prospects for uninhabited areas,” added Chavdarova.
