Bulgaria may have to bid its dreams about the South stream pipeline goodbye. This is almost certain after Gazprom received permission from Turkey for the construction of the Turkish Stream pipeline today.

Despite assertions that the two pipelines are not in direct competition and may be constructed independently, in reality, by building Turkish stream, Gazprom does not need the pipeline through Bulgaria in order to bypass Ukraine and deliver gas to Europe.

Earlier, Russian Energy Minister, Alexander Novak, stated that an inter-governmental agreement is expected to be signed in October, 2016 for the implementation of the project. Construction works may begin at the same time after all licenses for construction in Turkish territorial waters have been received.
