EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has sent a letter to Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov saying he is taking on the commitment to bolstering the security of Bulgaria's external border, the Commission representation in Sofia has said.

The decision will be formalized at an EU summit in Bratislava scheduled for September 16, Juncker is quoted as saying.

He has added that Commission experts are due to arrive in Bulgaria in a matter of days to make themselves familiar with the situation on the ground and prepare an update to an action plan that can be triggered in case of an emergency.

Bulgaria can count on the Commission's support in the "fragile" situation of border commitments between Bulgaria and Turkey, Juncker has made clear.

Juncker has also urged the EU's border security agency, FRONTEX, to put in more effort and deliver on its promise to send 53 vehicles that will be used along the borders with Turkey and Serbia.
