Macedonian politicians agreed on Wednesday that the snap election that was set for June but cancelled is to be held on December 11.

In a meeting bringing together the leaders of four major parties to smooth out differences, they also decided to set up an interim government.

Under the deal reached by VMRO-DPMNE, the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), the Democratic Party of Albanians (DPS) and the Democratic Union of Integration (DUI), the caretaker cabinet will be elected in September.

SDSM, which is the biggest opposition party, will take over the ministers of interior and labor. They will appoint deputy ministers in the finance, agriculture, and administration ministers.

The new cabinet will have to be appointed on September 02, in accordance with an existing agreement, state-run news agency MIA reports.

On the same day, a new editor-in-chief will be appointed at the public broadcaster MTV, named Santa Argirova, to make sure reporting will be balanced before the elections. A 4-strong commission designed to oversee media coverage in the run-up to and during the vote, will be expanded to include a fifth member, named Lulzim Hazimi.

Elections did not take place on the previous date in June due to disagreement among parties over the cleaning up of electoral rolls and a controversial move by President Gjorge Ivanov to grant amnesty on people involved in a wiretapping affair that rocked the country late in 2014 and in 2015, plunging it into a political crisis.
