Turkey will open on Friday a third bridge linking Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus following investment of some USD 3 B by the private sector, Anadolu Agency has reported.

The “longest suspension bridge to have a railway system” in the world is expected to save an estimated USD 1.75 B a year in terms of time loss and energy costs, as well as decrease air pollution and traffic congestion in Istanbul, the Turkish news agency has reported citing officials.

The bridge, featuring a total of eight road lanes and two rail tracksis 1.4km long and 59m wide.

The Turkish government has guaranteed to the operators a daily traffic of 135,000 motor vehicles. Automobiles travelling from the European to the Asian side will pay a fee of TRY 9.90 (EUR 2.98), while the use of the bridge in the opposite direction will be free of charge, Anadolu said.
