Four Remain in Race for Bulgarian Socialist Nominee for President

Three of seven potential candidates for President from Bulgaria’s main opposition Socialist Party have withdrawn their nominations, public radio broadcaster BNR reported on Wednesday.

Rumen Getchev, Maj. Gen. Rumen Radev, Tasko Ermenkov and Yanaki Stoilov remain in the race for the nomination of the party for the November 6 presidential elections.

General Radev, former Bulgarian Air Force Commander, is seen as the most likely nominee of the Socialists at present.

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and left-wing ABV headed by former President Georgi Parvanov have reached an agreement to nominate Gen Radev for the post.

The BSP governing body, the National Council, will hold a secret vote later on Wednesday to decide who will be their candidate for head of state.

Iliana Yotova, Mihail Mikov and Mario Traykov said on Wednesday that they were leaving the nomination race.

BSP spokesman Jelyo Boychev told BNR that General Rumen Radev will be the best choice as his profile will allow the Socialists to seek broad public support among those who disapprove of the policies of the centre right government coalition led by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
