Bulgarian border police chief and one of his deputies have resigned over a scandal involving the awarding of a public contract to a company linked to a person arrested for migrant smuggling.

The Minister of the Interior Rumyana Bachvarova accepted the resignations of Border Police Chief Commissary Antonio Angelov and Senior Commissary Yotko Andreev, the Ministry of the Interior said in a statement on Monday.

Andreev had been in charge of running a public tender for hiring a bus for transporting irregular migrants detained by police to accommodation centres inside the country.

The ministry launched an in-depth investigation of the tender procedure on Sunday, according to the statement.

Local media revealed on Sunday that a company reportedly owned by a Bulgarian citizen arrested for migrant smuggling had won the tender.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov requested the two Border Police chiefs to resign earlier on Monday following the media reports of suspected foul play in the tender.
