Bulgaria has asked Turkey to help find and bring to justice a Turkish citizen suspected of causing the death of two motorbikers in July.

The Regional Prosecutor's Office - Sofia has sent to the Turkish judicial authorities a request for legal aid for the extradition of Faruk Bektas to Bulgaria to stand trial, according to a statement posted on the website of the Prosecutor's Office of Bulgaria on Monday.

Bektas has been charged with causing the death of Bulgarian citizens Boyko Boykov and Tanya Boykova while driving a motor vehicle near Dragoman, in western Bulgaria on July 24. Bekta? was on his way home from Germany to Turkey transiting Bulgaria when the accident occurred.

A court in Sofia ordered that Bektas was placed under house arrest on July 28. Bulgarian police said last week that he could not be found at the address cited in the court ruling for house arrest.

The disappearance of Bektas sparked a protest rally by motorbikers in front of the Palace of Justice and the Turkish embassy in Sofia last week.

The Bulgarian prosecutors have ordered to launch a search for Bektas under an international arrest warrant issued on Friday.
