Bulgaria’s right-wing Reformist Bloc will select its candidate for the fortcoming presidential elections from seven nominees, Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva has announced.

“We’ll begin to discuss the nominations on Tuesday,” Kuneva said at a press briefing in the city of Ruse on Saturday.

To meet the deadline for making the nominations is a good first step in picking a common presidential candidate of the five parties that comprise the Reformist Bloc, Kuneva added.

Kuneva is leader of Bulgaria of Citizens Movement, which is part of the Reformist Bloc (RB). The RB are the junior partner in the minority coalition government dominated by the centre-right GERB party led by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

The Reformist Bloc needs a person with clear Euro-Atlantic values declared without embarrassment, and a centre-right profile, Kuneva added.

The nominees to choose from include law professor and former parliament speaker Ognyan Gerdzhikov, renowned sculptor Velislav Minekov, Army General Sabi Sabev, former intelligence chief Gen. Dimo Gyaurov, and Traycho Traikov, who served as minister of economy, energy and tourism (2009-2012) in the previous cabinet led by Boyko Borisov.

Member of Parliament Grozdan Karadzhov, and Korman Ismailov, who is leader of NPSD (a party within the RB), are also among the nominees.

Meglena Kuneva has said that she won’t run for president in the elections and will back the candidate proposed by the Reformist Bloc.

Bulgaria will hold presidential elections on 6 November 2016.
