The Supreme Judicial Council (VSS)'s colleage of prosecutors in Bulgaria is due to elect a new head of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, the agenda of the VSS shows.

Incumbent Emiliya Rusinova and investigator Boyko Atanasov are the two contenders.

Atanasov came under the spotlight earlier this week by suggesting the Bulgarian prosecuting authority was overdependent on Sotir Tsatsarov, the country's Chief Prosecutor.

Hristo Dinev, the previous Sofia City Prosecutor whom part of the VSS sees as "dependent" on Tsatsarov, stepped down in May, citing health reasons.

The institution is vital in the fight agains abuse of office, high-level corruption, and criminal offenses allegedly committed by lawmakers (who cannot face prosecution unless they agree to have their immunity revoked or a prosecutor's request is approved by Parliament).

The development comes at a moment when officials have been questioning the efficiency of the prosecution amid an ongoing EU analysis that is being conducted on the office, at the recommendation of the EU Commission.
