British Ambassador Emma Hopkins has said her country hopes to manage to protect the rights of Bulgarians who already live in the UK.

In an interview with private national bTV station, she has added London expects that the rights of British nationals who live in Europe will be observed as well.

The UK does not keep separate record of Bulgarians, but says together with Romanians they are more than 232 (unofficial data suggesting Bulgarians are less than 100 000).

The Ambassador's words come after Britain's Parliament failed to adopt a document proposed by the Labour Party that called for guarantees that EU nationals living in the UK will remain even after Britain is out of the bloc.

Additionally, Bulgarians, Romanians and other Eastern Europeans were targeted by a campaign led by UKIP and its ex-leader Nigel Farage over the past years.
