The Foreign Ministry in Sofia has instructed Nadezhda Neynski, Bulgaria's Ambassador to Ankara, not to comment on the situation in Turkey in the aftermath of a foiled coup attempt, a national newspaper writes.
Neynski has remained silent, not issuing a single comment and not returning calls from Bulgarian journalists, since the events began over the weekend.
The Ambassador says, quoted by mass-circulation daily 24 Chasa which claims to have gotten through to her, that she has been working to assist any Bulgarians who were in Turkey at the time of the coup.
But she has added: "I follow the instructions of my ministry and take them into account.
In the first minutes after the coup, [Foreign] Minister Daniel Mitov personally and insistenly asked me that I make no statements whatsoever on what is happening in Turkey."
The Foreign Ministry itself has confirmed for 24 Chasa there is a ban on any comments with regard to the coup attempt from officials other than the Prime Minister.
