Emiliya Kovacheva, the midwife charged with the attempted murder of a 4-year-old baby, has been released on a bail of BGN 1500 (EUR 767).

A court has ruled that the current measure imposed on her, house arrest, should be revoked as it is disproportionate to the charges.

Allegedly, in the early hours of Monday Emiliya Kovacheva began hitting a baby with her hands and a glass bottle used to feed children.

CCTV footage from the hospital allegedly shows here trying to strangle the baby, just seconds after having caressed other babies in the same room.

Kovacheva pleads not guilty. She admits to having hit the baby, but denies being the women on the CCTV footage.

The baby has not suffered permanent traumas as a result of the incident.

But the case has raised awareness of working conditions for midwives and other hospital employees, which are seen by some as a cause for burnout that could cause outbursts of aggression or tragic accidents.
