Bulgarian Authorities Seize Gold Worth Over BGN 60 000 in Men's Underwear

Bulgarian customs officials seized contraband golden jewellery worth more than BGN 60 000 at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint.

The pieces of jewellery were hidden in the underwear of two men traveling from Turkey to Bulgaria in a car bearing Pazardzhik licence plates.

Although the driver and his two companions declared neither goods nor currency, their vehicles was selected for thorough inspection.

During the inspection, customs officials found golden jewellery weighing a total of 1.152 kilogrammes hidden in the underwear of the driver and one of his companions.

Three plastic bags containing 291 pieces of jewellery, among which 125 necklaces, 69 pairs of earrings, 46 medallions, 42 rings and nine bracelets, were found in the underwear of one of the men.

According to the expertise, the fourteen-karat golden jewellery weighed a total of 924 grammes and was worth BGN 51 744.

Another 41 pieces of fourteen-karat golden jewellery weighing 228.5 grammes and worth BGN 12 796 were found in the underwear of the driver.

The jewellery, vehicle and one of the men, a 54-year-old Bulgarian, have been detained.

On Monday, customs officials at Kapitan Andreevo found fifty pieces of golden jewellery weighing 255 grammes and worth BGN 14 280 hidden in the lingerie of a Bulgarian woman.
