The large-scale tax inspections, which have been conducted in Bulgaria's Black Sea resorts since June, have brought extra BGN 200 M in revenues.

This was announced by Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in parliament on Wednesday.

Borisov stated that the joint inspections of officials of the interior ministry and the National Revenue Agency (NAP) in Bulgaria's Black Sea resorts will continue throughout the summer.

The large-scale inspections began after the shooting targeting local druglord Dimitar Zhelyazkov in Sunny Beach in June, which claimed the life of one of his bodyguards and left Zhelyazkov and another one of his bodyguards heavily injured.

The inspections will continue until the end of the summer season, with the inspectors going to move to the ski resorts in the winter.

Borisov added that authorities are considering to expand the inspections to popular restaurants in cities across the country.

The prime minister pointed that the inspections of the owners of expensive cars along the Black Sea coast have brought additional BGN 1 M to the budget.

He did not agree with the claim that the heightened control and the large-scale inspections along the Black Sea coast have harmed tourism.

In June last year, the revenues from tourism amounted to BGN 800 M, while this year the corresponding figure was BGN 1 B.

Moreover, there was 18 % increase in the number of tourists visiting the region of Burgas. This was before the beginning of the high season months of July and August.

According to Borisov, currently the only way through which contraband goods could reach the Black Sea is by sea, but the maritime control has also been heightened.

Starting from July 1, the interior ministry stationed eight checkpoints in Sunny Beach and the number of police officers posted to the resort has also been increased. Police on horseback has been patrolling the resort of Albena since Wednesday.
